Telegram vs Discord for picks: which to run

5 min read · By the SlipRelay team

Most pick sellers end up on Telegram, Discord, or both. They solve different problems. Telegram channels are built for broadcasting to an audience. Discord servers are built for a community with roles and many channels. This guide compares the two for running free picks and a paid VIP, and covers how to keep VIP private on each.

Side by side

TelegramDiscord
Basic unitChannels for broadcasting and groups for chat. Telegram describes channels as a tool for broadcasting to large audiences (Telegram FAQ).A server with many text channels. Access to each is controlled by roles (Discord: Setting Up Permissions FAQ).
Broadcast vs communityIn a channel, only admins can post (Telegram: Channels tour). Comments need a linked discussion group (Telegram: Channels FAQ).Members chat by default. You turn off Send Messages to make a pick channel read-only.
Paid accessPrivate channels plus invite links. Telegram also has paid invite links billed monthly in Stars (Telegram blog: Star subscriptions).A VIP role that opens private channels (Discord: Role-Exclusive channel).
BotsBots can be added to groups and channels (Telegram: Bots). Admin bots can create invite links, approve join requests and ban users (Telegram Bot API).Bots are invited with set permissions. A bot can only manage roles below its own highest role (Discord: Roles and Permissions).
PrivacyPrivate channels need an invite link or to be added by the owner (Telegram: Channels FAQ). Restrict Saving Content blocks forwarding and screenshots (Telegram blog).Private channels are hidden from anyone without the role. Use View Server As Role to check (Discord: View Server As Role).
Search and discoveryPublic channels show up in Telegram search and can be viewed on the web without an account (Telegram: Channels FAQ; Channels tour).Server Discovery requires a Community server with at least 1,000 members and an age of 8 weeks or more (Discord: Enabling Server Discovery, read via search excerpt).
Moderation loadLow for a channel, since only admins post. Groups need moderation.Higher. Verification levels and AutoMod help (Discord: Verification Levels; AutoMod FAQ).
Posting from a phoneFull posting from the app, plus scheduled and silent posts (Telegram: Channels tour).Full posting from the app. Pins work on mobile with a long-press (Discord: Pin Messages FAQ, read via search excerpt).
Media and linksImages, text and links in channel posts. Each post has a view counter (Telegram: Channels FAQ).Images, embeds and webhooks that let other tools post into a channel (Discord: Intro to Webhooks).
Member limitsChannels: unlimited subscribers. Groups: up to 200,000 members (Telegram: Groups tour). Not listed here. We couldn't load Discord's current caps page to confirm it.

When Telegram fits

Telegram suits sellers who want a clean feed and little upkeep.

  • You post picks and results and don't want to run a chat room.
  • Your followers already use Telegram.
  • You want people to find you through public channel search.
  • You want views per post as a rough read on reach.

The tradeoff is less structure. A channel is one feed. If you want separate channels for each sport, or a members-only chat next to your picks, you'll be managing several chats.

When Discord fits

Discord suits sellers who want a community around the picks.

  • You want #free-picks, #vip-picks, #results and a chat channel in one place.
  • You want members to talk with each other.
  • You plan to add roles later, such as a separate tier per sport.
  • You want other tools to post in through webhooks.

The tradeoff is moderation. Open chat attracts spam and impersonators, and permissions take care to set up correctly.

Running both

Many sellers use one platform for reach and the other for paid access.

Free Telegram channel, VIP Discord. The Telegram channel carries free picks, teasers and weekly recaps. It's easy to share and low maintenance. VIP lives in a Discord role, where members also get a chat channel.

Free Discord, VIP Telegram channel. The Discord server is the free community hub. VIP is a private Telegram channel with Restrict Saving Content turned on, so members just get the picks with no chat noise.

Either way, keep the record in one place and post results on both. If a VIP pick loses, the free side should see that too.

Paid-access tools

These tools link a payment to access and remove it when a subscription ends. They are named only as examples. Check fees and terms yourself.

  • Both platforms: LaunchPass says it lets you charge for access to Discord and Telegram (LaunchPass). InviteMember says it sells access to Telegram channels and groups and Discord roles (InviteMember).
  • Discord: Whop assigns a role after payment; its bot must sit above the role it sells (Whop docs, login required; read via search excerpt).
  • Telegram, built in: paid invite links charge a monthly Stars fee and add the subscriber on payment (Telegram blog: Star subscriptions; Telegram API: Star subscriptions).

Keeping VIP private

On Telegram:

  1. Keep the VIP channel private. New channels start private (Telegram: Channels tour).
  2. Never post the main invite link publicly. Use additional links, and turn on Request Admin Approval so you approve each join (Telegram blog: join requests).
  3. If you use a bot, links can have an expiry date and a member limit, and a revoked link stops working (Telegram Bot API).
  4. Turn on Restrict Saving Content.
  5. When someone stops paying, remove them. A banned user can't rejoin a channel through invite links until unbanned (Telegram Bot API).

On Discord:

  1. Make #vip-picks a Private Channel and add only the VIP role (Discord: Roles and Permissions).
  2. Check the channel isn't synced to a public category.
  3. Test with View Server As Role, once as @everyone and once as VIP.
  4. Treat the VIP webhook URL like a password. Anything holding it can post there.

A posting tool that fits either setup

SlipRelay is posting software for pick sellers. It doesn't sell picks, take bets, or touch your subscribers or payments. One entry posts a branded card to X, Discord (free and VIP channels) and Bluesky. You can send picks from your phone by texting the SlipRelay Telegram bot, though it doesn't post to Telegram channels. Spreads, moneylines and totals in major US leagues grade themselves. Plans start at $24/month with a free week.

Post once. It lands everywhere.

SlipRelay posts your picks to Discord, Bluesky and X as branded cards, posts the results when games end, and keeps a record you can't edit. 7 days free.
