How to grow a sports picks account on X in 2026
X is still where a lot of bettors look for picks, but growing a picks account there in 2026 works differently than it did a few years ago. Promo codes are out, duplicate posting gets flagged, and links cost API users more. What still works is the slow, honest version: a clear brand, a public record, and real conversations.
The big change: no sportsbook promo codes
Since February 13, 2026, X's Paid Partnerships policy puts gambling on its prohibited list for organic paid partnerships. Industry coverage reports this covers affiliate commissions, referral and discount codes, and sportsbook deals, and that labeling the post as an ad doesn't make it allowed (Gambling Insider, CasinoBeats, AffPapa). Reported penalties run from post removal to account restrictions and suspension. Check X's own Paid Partnerships policy for the exact wording.
What that means for growth:
- Don't build on affiliate income from X. No promo codes in posts, replies, bio or pinned post.
- Posting your own picks and your own VIP is different. It isn't a third-party paid partnership.
- Move affiliate deals elsewhere, if you have them, and keep X for picks, results and conversation.
Set up the profile first
People decide in a few seconds whether to follow. Make the profile answer their questions.
- Name and handle that match your brand everywhere else.
- Bio in one line: sports you cover, how you post, and where your record is. For example: "NBA and NFL sides and totals. Every pick timestamped. Full record below."
- One link to your record page or a link hub with your record, Discord and VIP.
- Pinned post with your record link and how your units work. Update it monthly.
- Header image that matches your pick cards, so the brand is consistent.
Post every pick the same way
Consistency is what makes people remember you.
- Use a branded pick card. Team, line, odds, units and the time you posted. Our guide to bet slip graphics covers layout.
- Write a short line of your own above the card. A sentence on why you like it. This also keeps posts from looking identical.
- Post results every day, including losing days, in the same format as the picks.
- Post a weekly recap with units and the number of picks.
Avoid the things that get accounts limited
X's rules are the fastest way to stall growth if you ignore them.
| Habit | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Same text on several accounts | X's automation rules prohibit duplicative or substantially similar posts on one account or across accounts you operate (X: Automation rules) |
| Auto-likes, auto-follows, auto-replies | X's Developer Guidelines say likes must be user-initiated, automated replies need the user to engage first, and bulk or automated following isn't allowed (X Developer Guidelines) |
| Automated promo DMs | Automated DMs need the user to message first (X Developer Guidelines) |
| Bought followers or engagement | Inauthentic engagement is prohibited under X's spam policy (X: Platform manipulation and spam policy) |
Scheduling your own posts is fine. X's Developer Guidelines allow scheduled informational posts without unsolicited mentions (X Developer Guidelines).
Links: put them in your bio
If you post through X's API, which every scheduling tool does, links cost more. X's pay-per-use pricing lists $0.015 per post and $0.200 per post containing a URL (X API pricing). Third-party coverage reported the URL rate went up on April 20, 2026, and that posts made by hand in the app aren't affected (Gigazine).
Write "link in bio" instead of pasting a URL. It also reads less like spam.
Grow through replies, by hand
Replies are where most small accounts find their first followers.
- Reply to bigger accounts in your sport with something useful: an injury note, a line move, a stat. Not "tail me".
- Answer every genuine question on your own posts.
- Thank people who tail, and say nothing to trolls.
- Don't drop your link in other people's replies. It looks like spam and rarely converts.
Do all of this yourself. Replies are where people decide if you're a real person.
Content that earns follows
Beyond picks, a few post types tend to get shared:
- Short breakdowns of one game: the number, why you like it, what would change your mind.
- Line movement notes before a big slate.
- Honest recaps of a losing week. Sellers who own a bad week stand out.
- Threads on your process, like how you size units or why you pass on certain games.
Don't post earnings screenshots or "turn $50 into $5,000" claims. Careful buyers leave, and if you use member results in promotion, the FTC expects you to show what people can generally expect (FTC Endorsement Guides (eCFR)).
Let the record do the selling
A public record you can't edit is the best growth tool you have. Link it in your bio and pinned post, and send it whenever someone asks about your results. See how to show a record buyers actually trust for details.
Posting that follows these rules
If you want posting that follows these habits by default, SlipRelay is one option. It's posting software for pick sellers. It doesn't sell picks, take bets, or touch your subscribers or payments. You enter a pick once and it posts a branded card to X, Discord and Bluesky. On X, every post starts with your brand name, repeating scheduled posts get the date added, and links in post text become "(link in bio)". It never likes, follows, replies or DMs. Spreads, moneylines and totals in the NFL, college football, NBA, WNBA, men's college basketball, MLB and NHL grade themselves; props, parlays, soccer and UFC are graded by hand. Plans start at $24/month with a free week.
